Life’s storms are inevitable, but we can endure them together—hand in hand with each other and with Christ. Today, I want to share a deeply personal journey, one that shaped me in ways I never expected. I write this not just to tell my story, but in the hope that it may encourage you in yours.
Like many of you, I grew up in a dysfunctional home. The challenge was breaking free from the patterns I was raised with so I could learn how to truly live. Healing didn’t come easily, but through G-d’s grace, I found my way.
A Painful Beginning
My parents’ relationship was fractured. My father sought comfort elsewhere, while my mother withdrew into a shell, lashing out from her own pain. I was born while my father was deployed in the Philippines during his Navy service. He believed I wasn’t his son and, as a result, never accepted me.
For years, I harbored deep resentment toward him. Anger hardened my heart, and bitterness defined my perception of him. But God had a different plan—one that involved healing, restoration, and ultimately, forgiveness.
Lessons God Taught Me
- Forgiveness is freedom. It wasn’t easy. Resentment had a firm grip on my heart. But true freedom came the day I could look my father in the eye and know I had forgiven him. – Mark 11:25
- Letting go of the past is necessary. The scars ran deep, but I found healing when I looked beyond my pain and into my father’s. His life was marked by wounds he never addressed. Understanding his suffering helped me release my own.
- Compassion changes everything. As my father aged, his mind faded into a world of memories and illusions, a reality he created to cope. In his most vulnerable years, I became his caregiver.
- Love is the ultimate peace. My heart finally found peace when I chose to love my father unconditionally. Only then did I see him through the eyes of Christ. – John 13:35
