Reconciliation: Healing Broken Relationships
Have you ever experienced deep heartache because of a broken relationship? Perhaps someone has hurt you, or maybe you’ve been the one who caused pain. When relationships are damaged or destroyed, bitterness can take root, robbing us of peace. One of the enemy’s greatest tactics—even among believers—is to keep us from reconciliation, denying us the peace that comes through forgiveness.
I know this struggle firsthand. For over thirty years, I had a deeply strained relationship with my father. I never understood why he treated me as an outcast or seemed to harbor resentment toward me. The weight of our fractured bond followed me into adulthood, leaving me with unanswered questions and emotional wounds.
Then, an unanticipated moment changed everything.
An Unexpected Confession
At the time, I was serving in my first pastorate in Cañon City, Colorado. One Sunday morning, my father called, explaining that his Volkswagen Beetle had broken down in Syracuse, Kansas. He asked if I could pick him up, as he had planned a surprise visit. Since I had two services that day, I told him I would leave after the evening service to make the five-hour drive.
I arrived late that night and met him at a truck stop restaurant. We packed his belongings into my car and began the long journey home. I dreaded those hours together, anticipating tension and awkward silence. But instead, something surprising happened.
At first, Dad kept me entertained with his usual wild stories. Then his tone shifted. He spoke about my mother, their divorce, and the deep pain he had carried after he returned home. And then came the moment that changed everything.
“Marie had an affair while I was overseas, and you were born nine months later. I found out and knew you were not my son.”
The weight of his words hit me like a tidal wave. I had never heard this story before. At first, I thought it was just another one of his exaggerations. But then he continued.
“I never accepted you as my son, and that’s why we have had a strained relationship for so long.”
I sat stunned, trying to process what I’d just heard. For years, I had longed for answers—now, here they were. And despite the pain of his admission, something surprising happened in my heart.
The Power of Forgiveness
The next day, I called my mother to verify his story. She told me that she had indeed had an affair—but she was already pregnant with me when it happened. That moment of clarity changed everything. My father and I finally understood each other. And though the years of rejection had been painful, I chose to forgive him.
That decision brought us reconciliation. Our relationship, once cold and distant, was finally restored. And more importantly, I found peace.
Breaking the Chains of Unforgiveness
Forgiveness brings freedom. It removes the enemy’s foothold and allows the peace of God to fill the spaces where bitterness once lived. If you have a strained relationship in your life, I urge you—seek reconciliation. Humble yourself. Extend forgiveness, even when it’s complicated.
Jesus’ words remind us of its importance:
“But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” – Matthew 6:15
